September 5, 1887 — A fine collected

1887 09 05

Rec’d of DJ Allen J.P. $4.00 it being a fine collected

State vs. Wm Gaines (col) I am to bring this money

to the county treasurer and take his receipt for same.

Sept 5 1887                                        S.H. Milton

Yet again, I’m unsure of the name.  My best guess is SH Milton, but I cannot find anyone like that on an 1880 or 1900 census.  The person for whom the fine is due looks to be Wm Gaines, colored.  I’ve found a William Gaines, 48, on the 1900 census living in Lilesville.  I’m not certain, of course, that it’s the same person and need to see if I can find any court records to document.  A $4 fine back then seems to indicate, at least to me, a more serious crime.

John A. Tyson

Again, I’m not sure of the initials, whether it’s PW Melton (I’m pretty sure that’s what the earlier initials are) or something else entirely.  I can really only find the one Melton family in the area.

John A. Tyson also has me a little stumped.  I can find a John H. Tyson in Centre, Stanly County, NC on the 1880 census.  He was a physician.  I can also find a John Tyson of Ansonville, Anson County, NC which is fairly close.  I don’t have enough information, at this time, to made make a judgement call.

Post Office at Norwood, NC

Registered Letter No 26. Rec’d Nov 27 1880

of D J Allen

addressed to Benjamin Whitmore

New York, NY

PW Melton, PM

Evidently PW Melton was not only a saddler but also Post Master?  I have found a Benjamin Whitmore in Bronx, New York in 1880 but have not found a connection between DJ Allen and him.  Looking forward to finding out more.

Rec’d of D J Allen $5.00 dollars

T. W. Melton?

Possibilities for the signature are Melton or Williams?  I have found a P. T. Melton on the 1880 census.  He is a saddler.   Looking back at the first receipt, the bottom name/signature on that receipt appears to be a Melton/Milton as well.
